Buy Your TP Somewhere Else?

Someone tipped me off the other day about buying toilet paper at an office supply store.  For the pedestrian shopper they sell the regular stuff sold in plastic (marked up I imagine).  But since this is an “office” store they sell “office” toilet paper too.  You know, the kind you see on the janitor’s cart, wrapped in (recyclable) paper?  If you can look past my grumpy toddler, you’ll see what I mean.

Seen here in a typical day.

Costco and Sam’s Club also sell huge boxes of paper-wrapped TP.

There’s just one problem.

Since writing about TP last year, I’ve been trying to buy unbleached toilet paper made from partially-recycled material, this link being a good guide.

So where else can I find bulk, plastic-free hippie TP?

I know I said “it doesn’t seem very Zero Waste to order a truck to drive to my house to drop off unmentionables”, but from Amazon you can get 100% recycled, 80% post-consumer material, wrapped in paper-Seventh Generation toilet paper for about the same price as you would at Whole Foods (make sure to get the Free Shipping option).

Of course, you could also buy them piecemeal, at Whole Foods.  If you sweeten up the grocery dude, you can probably get the box before it hits the shelf, but he said he’d still charge you the full price.  Boo.

And Costco and Sam’s Club do sell the Marcal Small Steps toilet paper, a brand that is true to its name, Small Steps, as its post-consumer percentage is on the low side compared to his green brothers.

So I guess it depends on where you already do most of your shopping.  Last year I also said “we now limit our grocery shopping to a mile and a half radius from our home.”  So I might stick to that.  But you Amazonians out there have a nice option to consider as well.  But I’m serious about the free shipping.  You’ll see.

About Me

I’ve been passionate about combatting blind consumerism since 2008 and joined the Zero Waste movement by starting this blog in 2013, soon after my second child was born. I think it might have been trying to unwrap a toy or someone’s attempt to sell me a butt-wipe warmer that put me over the edge… read more
